Ten With the Team!

So I was running with the team again this past Saturday. It was 10 miles this time. Double digits!! OMG! Just like before the 9 miler I was nervous as anything! I’ve never done 10 miles before. What makes me think I can do 10 miles??? But of course, that’s what you train for all week. Of course we were ready!
So my running buddy Cindy and I were waiting to take off and I did the usual ‘systems check’. Nike+ Non-functioning since the last iPhone OS upgrade. Oh well, I have my Garmin right? Nope! It wouldn’t turn on for some reason
So I call my tech savvy husband and I catch him while he is in the middle of his own run. He breathlessly gives me a few tips to try. None of which work.
Damn! I haven’t ran gadget free before. Not a big deal since the TNT coaches plotted the route. So I didn’t have to watch the distance to ensure we did 10. But the Garmin beeps to let us know when our running intervals start and stop. Luckily my iPhone has a stop watch and timer. So I set the time for 9 minutes and the stop watch for a minute. So that allowed us to keep track of the intervals. But how are we going to watch our pace? The old fashion talk test? Gosh! How archaic and untechnical!
I was annoyed and turned to one of the team mentors and said, “I can’t believe BOTH of my trackers are down! Can you believe that?! What are the chances??”
She grinned, grabbed my shoulders and shook me gently then said, “But you can still run!”
Yes I can. And I did.
It was hilly as I expected. But we did good. It’s funny how the miles peel away when you have a good running partner. Except, we were fooled a few times.
First we saw Pete our SAG guy. Usually, he’s near the turn around point. But this time he was just at mile 2! Then we saw Coach April and I thought she was at the turn around. But we found she was at the turn around for the half marathon runners. Cindy and I still had a long way to go.
But it was cool. We ran out through the AG pastures for the college and saw cute little cows. Then we ran across a local senior out on his daily run. He has been running in the area for over 25 years. So he knew the best routes out there. Lucky for us because we got turned around and had to ask him for directions.
On our way back from the turn around point, we saw a gorgeous wood owl in a tree. He was magnificent!
When we were back on the college campus we saw a bus doing its rounds. It passed us a few times as we ran through. We were the only ones out there. It was still early in the morning and summer. Not many students out.
At one point we had to stop and check out the route map. I didn’t mind because it was toward the top of a big hill that was kicking my butt! I appreciated the break!
As we were standing there huddled over our maps and me sucking air like I’m on top of Everest, the bus came down the hill and pulled along side us. The driver opened the door and I thought he was going to try to get us to skip the rest of the run and take a bus ride in!
I looked over and started to wave him off. But he said, “Hey Ladies, you go straight up this hill, turn left, go down that hill  and your team truck is waiting for you there.”
“Thanks!!”
He was exactly right! Pete was waiting for us right where the driver said he’d be. I was going to take us up the wrong street! Cindy was right about how she thought we were supposed to go. So as we were running down the hill toward Pete I told Cindy:
“That’s it. I’m gadget girl. I’ll tell us when to run and walk. You’re now the navigator. You tell us where to go.” :)
We had more hills all the way back into the park. But we cleared them and we cleared them in style! 10 miles. No problem!

My Second 9 Miler

So last Saturday I had my second 9 mile run. The Team was running  a 6 mile sponsored race and adding 3 miles to it to make their 9. I opted to run ‘with’ my husband instead and avoid the long drive to the race site.
Kris was running a  16 mile route. So he let me sleep in. Smart man. The plan was for me to run out the same route as Kris to the 4.5 mile mark and run back. That way we’d be sure to see each other on the run.
And we did. We actually passed each other on opposite sides of the street. We waved to each other and then Kris grabbed his phone and it looked like he was texting as he was running. That takes talent. I wondered who he was texting. Oh! It was me! “I love you!” That kept me running! :)
At the 5 mile mark I got another text “Run Jill Run!” That’s how I knew when Kris had finished his route.
This second 9 miler was much flatter than my last 9 miler. I was running pretty good and staying pretty comfortable. I had seen a lot of bikers on the road this day and remembered it was time for the Tailwinds Windmill ride. The Tailwinds always put on a good ride!
I was at the corner to the entrance of my neighborhood. I hit the crosswalk button and heard, “Thanks” behind me.
I turned and saw a cyclist waiting to cross the street too.
I said, “Hi. How far you going today?”
“100 miles. (pause) and I have 38.5 miles to go,” he finished tiredly.
“You can do it! You’ll make it just fine!”
“I hope so! So how far’s your run?”
I hated to tell him I was almost done with my work for the day, “I have 9 miles today.....I’m 8.5 miles in.”
“Good for you,” he grinned.
“You are so going to make it. You’re looking really strong. No worries!”
“Thanks. You know I was a runner before I started biking. I got a stress fracture so  started biking while it heals.”
“That’s funny. I was a biker before I started running.”
The light turned green and we crossed together. Then we went our separate ways. I’m positive he not only made his 100 miles, I’m sure he came in in style!

The Ice Cream Man Stalks Me

So I was out on a regular run one day and feeling tired but good. I hear the familiar jiggle of the ice cream truck. Do do dododoo da da doodaloo!
“Ah, ice cream,” I think.
I kept jogging expecting the truck to pass me but it didn’t. I just kept hearing the music “Do do dododoo da da doodaloo”. I looked over my shoulder and low and behold it is crawling right behind me.
There were no kids around. There is a park just a couple blocks up but he’s not heading that way. He’s rolling behind me. Do do dododoo da da doodaloo.
I speed up and I make a hard right onto a side street. I hear the truck behind me. Do do dododoo da da doodaloo
About half a mile up there was an entrance to a trail that ran between the houses. So I tried to ignore the truck and kept running until I hit the trail. Do do dododoo da da doodaloo
So I jumped onto the trail as soon as I could and while I could still hear the ice cream music, it was muted Do do dododoo da da doodaloo
I enjoyed the trail until I had to turn back onto the street. And saw the truck WAITING for me! Do do dododoo da da doodaloo
It was waiting at a stop sign. It could have turned left or right to make a loop around the park (where all the kids are). But it just waited. To see which way I would go. Oh great!
I slowed down just to see if it would turn. Nope. It just waited. So when I went to the left, I was not surprised to find that it turned left and followed me. I know Ice Cream Truck was just waiting for me to crack! He had been following me for four blocks now. I was sweating and slowing down. He knew it was just a matter of time. :)
Luckily my house was only half a block away. I did a final “Hail Mary” sprint, flew through the front door and locked it behind me! And I heard the disappointed Ice Cream Truck pass on by.  Phew!

I Wonder If the Team Notices I'm Missing?

I haven't ran with the team in a couple weeks as I've been running with my husband on Saturdays.

The 9 mile run a couple weeks ago was amazing! We ran up Pt. Sal road for 4.5 miles and back. It took me part of the way up Pt. Sal itself. So I got some hill training in. But the coolest thing was a coyote ran out in front of me on the road! I have never seen one that close before. It was so neat! We also saw a HUGE gopher snake when we got back to the car. I almost stepped on it!!! It was at least 4" in diameter and a least 6' long!! Holy cow it was like Wild Kingdom out there that day!!!

But the best part was that I finished the 9 miles! I couldn't believe it!! It seems so long! So there I was running back down the route watching my Garmin count the distance 7.76 mi, 8.10 mi, 8.5, (OMG I think I'm going to make it), 8.74, 8.81, 8.90, 8.92, 8.94, 8.97, 8.99 .....9.00!!!!! I made it!! I was so excited I threw right arm up and punched the air in enthusiasm and then I pumped both of my arms above my head "Rocky" style and I heard beside me,

"How far did you go?"

I look over and I see a couple cyclists (who I had seen earlier on their way up) grinning at me. I was so embarrassed they had seen my display. "I uh, did 9 miles. ...I've never ran that far before"

"That's great!!" "Good for you!" They said. They rolled along side me for awhile chatting about running and biking and they were so nice and enthusiastic for me. So I wasn't so embarrassed after that. :)

Kris of course was back at the car by that time and shortly after that is when we 'discovered' the snake.

I've also started focusing on running negative splits each run and while it's hard to stay slow in the beginning of a run when you feel fresh, it seems to really improve my over all pace and I run more comfortably over the course of the route. So I'm going to keep that up and see what happens.

It's hard to run 5 miles in Waller Park because it is just so small. See the route by clicking the link.

Restful 6

Untitled by anjil1206 at Garmin Connect - Details

I really tried to focus on going out slow. It worked! I ran a negative split and my overall pacing was good on the run. I have to keep practicing that so I'll be ready to pace correctly over the marathon distance.

This was the 'long' run for our rest week. Back to the hard work next week!

Fast Night

I really didn't feel like running today. So I decided to try to get it 'over with' as fast as possible. Boy my pace was good tonight! :)

9 Miles today!

Untitled by anjil1206 at Garmin Connect - Details

Great run today. I was intimidated going out because I had never ran so far, my legs have been hurting this past week and we picked a hilly route. But I did just fine! My legs stayed pretty comfortable and my pace didn't take too much of a beating. Very happy with this run! :)
